Looking at migration through the gender lens

I was interviewed by Loksan Harley for his Migration & Diaspora Podcast.

During the podcast I talk about how our gender – along with other characteristics like our nationality, ethnicity, race, age etc – influences the way we experience the world – the access we have and the barriers that face us.

Gender has, for example, traditionally dictated that males undertake productive labour while women are responsible for reproductive labour. Equally, traditional gendered power dynamics have legitimised violence against women in order to reinforce men’s dominant roles and women’s subordinate roles.

While, in general, we are much more aware of how gendered norms manifest and how inequalities result in different realities for men and women, change in practice is moving at a slower pace. I talk about why it is important to look at migration through the gender lens, and address existing gender discrimination and inequality. In particular, because it gives us the ability to identify the barriers that are preventing equal access to safe migration and decent work.
